About Jazz at The Pines Jazz at The
Pines is now in its 10th year and has become an institution in The
Hills. Visitors from as far Newcastle, Wollongong and even Canberra
join “the locals” at this outdoor event. The setting is superb. The
property is set on a hill with sweeping views across to the Blue
Mountains. Tables and chairs are dotted amongst tall pine trees
surrounding the stage. There is a dance floor adjacent to the stage
to keep the dancers on their toes! All this is set against the
backdrop of historic Roughley House, built in 1856.
A
limited number of chairs and tables are available for those who
arrive early. You can also bring your own folding chairs or a
blanket to relax on the ground. Bring your picnic lunch and drinks
or enjoy fabulous home-made afternoon teas from the volunteers in
the Visitors Centre.
During band breaks, take a free tour of
historic Roughley House to hear its history from convict days to
today. There is plenty of parking and afternoon teas are available
in the Visitors Centre. Tickets are purchased at the gate.
There really is no better way to enjoy your Sunday!
Group Bookings We welcome group bookings for all
jazz events. Gates are open from approximately 11.00am and booked
tables are reserved until 12.45pm. Tickets are purchased as normal
at the gate. Please ensure you have at least some members of your
group at the table by that time as any unclaimed tables will then be
released.
Booking is easy! Either send us an email at
enquiries@sydneyhills.com.au or call the Visitors
Centre on 1300 884 881.
The Pines & historic Roughley
House Hear the real colonial history of The Pines on one of
our free tours throughout the afternoon. The Roughley family story
in Australia began in 1817 when Joseph Roughley and his son James
were convicted of theft and given a 7-year sentence of
transportation to Australia. Despite many hardships, successive
generations were able to work the land, build a house and raise
generations carrying the Roughley name.
The final family
resident, Gordon “Clive” Roughley, passed away in February 2002 aged
87 years. Prior to his death, Clive sold the property to Baulkham
Hills Shire Council for $1 so that it would be maintained as a
living history of colonial life in The Hills and remain accessible
to the public. Clive used to look forward to Jazz days where he
would sit on the front verandah, listen to the music and chat to
visitors about his house, his life and his family. Clive's oral
history is available from Baulkham Hills Library and is a
fascinating recolection of family life through the 20th century.
Tours of the homestead operate during band breaks on Jazz
days or group bookings by prior arrangement.
